The "SUIEN" (Deep bowl with handle-like ornament) |

From the Sori site, Height 43cm |
Along with the six pottery pieces excavated from Pit Dwelling No.4 at the Sori site, this deep bowl has been designated as a Nagano Prefecture prefectural treasure. This exemplary vessel was displayed as part of the "Japanese Ancient Art" exhibit that opened in Paris in 1963 and served to convey the splendidness of Japanese ancient culture to crowds of people. In 1972, an image of this vessel was selected to be used for a postage stamp. This handle-like ornament was named the "SUIEN" (like water ring or whirlpool) by the late Fujimori Eiichi. The two shapes that jut out from the vessel achieve superior balance and suggest light and shadow as well as the rays of the sun and moon. Among this style of Jomon pottery, this piece is undoubtedly the most superb work. |
